We discovered El Zarape a couple years ago and since then it’s become a local favorite. Located right in the heart of Universtity Heights, this simple setup yields lines of loyal customers. Their prices are super reasonable! You can get a Lobster or Scallop burrito for $7… amazing. But, let’s talk about the quality of their food.
The fish tacos at 99 cents is a steal! Like any good fish taco, you’d be wise to eat it on site so you can experience the full crunch of the recently fried batter. The white sauce is simple, but adds a light creamy flavor that compliments the fish and cabbage. Coupled with their salsa, it makes for one of their best and most complete experiences.
Of their two salsas, I like the dark red one. Although it looks super spicy, it has just the right amount of spice and flavor to accompany their tacos and burritos. The green is a bit milder and comes with a tang that many find refreshing. I suppose it’s a matter of preference.
Now let’s talk about their burritos. Another great bargain! If you love seafood in your burrito, it’s gonna be a real treat. The tortilla is simple and fresh, the seafood (I’ve only tried the lobster and scallops) is delish. While the lobster might not be traditional Maine lobster, it doesn’t really matter ‘cuz it’s still darn tasty.
El Zarape is a tried and true winner. It may not beat TJ Oyster Bar for best fish taco, but it’s close! I forgot to mention, their chicken and carne asada tacos and burritos are also GREAT! But, we’ll leave that to another post.
Food has always been a fun and gratifying part of my life. Rich flavors, spectacular colors, and seductive aromas all fuel my quest for the best food in San Diego! I've lived in SD for the past 16 years and can't imagine living anywhere else. Great food can be found anywhere (on a street corner, or the finest Michelin rated restaurant). Variety and balance is what I seek. I definitely have a sweet tooth (like much of my family), but I also enjoy the savory side just as much!
