Daddy’s Hot Dogs in San Diego
Daddy’s Hot Dogs in San Diego is pure bliss. We’re talking New York Style hot dogs made to order and infused with flavors galore that you won’t find elsewhere. They are located right in the heart of Hillcrest.
According to the owner, William, he has only been in operation a few months. We intend to support him so he stays here indefinitely! Here’s why…
A couple weeks ago, we were searching for a new lunch spot. We had intended to go to the Carnitas’ Snack Shack, but happened to go there on a day it was closed. So, Darren had heard of a new hot dog spot opening up and we figured we’d give it a try. As you can tell from the front of the shop, it’s a quaint unassuming place. As we got to the window, the owner William started to chat with us. We of course asked him what he recommended. And to our good surprise, he was a passionate hot dog purist and foodie at heart. He simply said, “Go with the Classic.” ”As a New Yorker, the “Manhattan” is what I grew up with. Simple, delicious, and to the point,” he stated proudly.
Since there weren’t that many people around, he invited us inside where there were a couple seats right in the kitchen area (really cool). He told us that after coming from a law enforcement career, he decided he wanted to pursue his passion – food! And talk about food he did. He told us all about his special techniques for extracting flavors, his homemade Russian dressing, and other quality ingredients he uses.
What made this extra special from any other hot dog place I’ve been to was his detailed touch and care. He butterflies the dogs and then sears both sides with love! Here is the classic, aka the “Manhattan” for $3… it was simply amazing and so delish! A pure beef dog, grilled onions, Deli mustard, and Sauerkraut. It was the perfect balance of flavors, condiments, and heat (temp wise). Next up was the “Shroom” dog.
Now I have to admit. This one was a bit of a surprise. Grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, swiss cheese & some mayo on a hot dog? Sounds a bit gimmicky, right? Nope! This dog totally worked and was another huge hit.
So by that time, I was in pure hot dog heaven! The truth is I haven’t had the likes of these anywhere else… even at Hot Doug’s in Chicago. So, without completely pigging out, we decided to share one final hot dog. The “Diego” Dog! OMG… the bomb.
As you can see, the hot dogs are pretty reasonable. They range from $3 to $6 and are worth every penny. William also tells us his best seller is actually the “Vanessa”, his signature veggie dog (somebody try that and tell me how it is). He also has a Buffalo dog for the non-vegans!
I only wish I was able to try more of these myself. However, I’m going to fix that very soon by taking a trip out there this week and bringing our friends from out of town with us. They are in for special treat!Daddy’s Hot Dogs 1281 University Avenue @ Richmond Avenue in Hillcrest San Diego, CA 92103
