Acqua – Mission Bay Hilton Resort

Acqua – Mission Bay Hilton Resort

Darren and I were recently invited to check out Acqua California Bistro in the Mission Bay Hilton.  We didn’t know quite what to expect, other than we heard Chef Schäfer has European roots and it is reflected in his cuisine.

The dining area inside was quite nice, but we were offered perfect seating al fresco overlooking Mission Bay.  The property is beautiful and the resort guests looked thoroughly satisfied with their surroundings.

Although it cooled down significantly once the sun had set, the heat lamps and fire pits kept us nice and toasty throughout dinner service.  …

Pillbox Tavern (Solana Beach)

Pillbox Tavern (Solana Beach)

We were invited up to Pillbox Tavern & Grill a few weeks ago in Solana Beach. They opened their doors late last year with Chef Shelly Velez heading up the kitchen. It was a new experience for us since we rarely find ourselves up in Solana Beach. I really dig the beachy vibe I got near Pillbox Tavern. They got their name from the famous beach break down below.

Once everyone cleared out I pounced and took a picture of the bar. It isn’t a huge place, but I kind of like it that way.…

Shizuoka Revisit (La Mesa)

Shizuoka Revisit (La Mesa)

We’ve been going to Shizuoka out in La Mesa for quite some time now for its good and cheap Japanese bento box offerings, Oyako Don, and Udon. At the end of 2014 they had an ownership change and the family that owned it decided to retire. Now there seems to be a shift between hot plates to a more sushi centered menu, although they do still serve many of the old items.

Family House of Pancakes

Family House of Pancakes

A year later and I’m still exploring all the little nooks in the South Bay.  One place that we’ve gone to a couple times is Family House of Pancakes.  It’s a solid, old school, pancake house with no frills.  But, their food is served piping hot and delicious!

On our most recent trip with our family, I decided to try their coconut waffle (they have a Belgium option too).  It was a decent size and plenty of coconut and powered sugar to satisfy my morning sweet tooth.  Like most breakfast places, the waffles and pancakes are served with whipped butter.  …

Happy Monday! Just as a reminder, our giveaway for Taste of Hillcrest ends tomorrow so don’t forget to enter for the event taking place on Saturday, April 18th. On to ice cream! Anh has a nose for sweets and her dessert radar is much more powerful than mine, especially when something comes from Northern California to us here in San Diego. We’ve been tracking its opening and heard rumors a new ice cream sandwich place had opened, but it turned out to be wishful thinking at the time.

Alas, a few weeks ago they did open its doors to the public and we got a chance to check them out in person.…

Taste of Hillcrest Giveaway!

Taste of Hillcrest Giveaway!

Logo

I still remember attending my first Taste of Hillcrest a few years back. I was a kid in the candy store on a mission: try to sample as many restaurants as possible before I spontaneously combust. I think I got to about thirty different places that day. The 15th Annual Taste of Hillcrest is right around the corner on Saturday, April 18th from noon to 4:00pm. There will be over 40 different food vendors featured! How many great eats will you get your hands on? Check out the list below for all the vendors signed up so far.…

Bali Hai (Point Loma)

DSC_0173

I has been at least three years since I’ve been to Bali Hai so it was about time we were reacquainted with each other. They are known for their Pacific Rim cuisine and amazing views, being nestled on the Northern tip of Shelter Island. Another fun fact is Tom Ham of Tom Ham’s Lighthouse opened Bali Hai in 1955. They must have won the lottery for best properties on the water with a view.
