Char House – Kearny Mesa

Char House – Kearny Mesa

When we heard a new Vietnamese restaurant was opening in Kearny Mesa, we immediately thought to ourselves: “okay another pho place.” Boy were we wrong. They don’t call themselves Char House for nothing. I should note they also own Pho 5th Avenue in Hillcrest and look to be trying something new here with Char House.

Street Food Specials

I’ve never been to Vietnam (I hope to one day!) so I can’t reach into my bag of street food memories and reflect. But according to Tee, the owner, these are all common in Vietnam. He was very proud to be serving these and I can’t say I’ve seen any other restaurant serve the same dishes.…

Pieology – Southwest Pizzas

Pieology – Southwest Pizzas

We were recently invited to try out Pieology’s new Southwestern pizzas.

Both Darren and I were excited to check out these custom creations as quick service pizzas are still all the rage (Pieology, Project Pie, Blaze, etc.).

When we arrived, we asked to speak with the manager to let him know we were there.  Typically a manager will come over to greet us and walk us through the menu, share any new items, and provide details on any questions we ask, but he was more interested in tending to pies in the oven, rather than us.  …

Chocolate Covered Strawberries with a Few Cherries On Top

Chocolate Covered Strawberries with a Few Cherries On Top

So after a recent and super fun tasting trip to Sweet Petite Confections, I got a bit of inspiration to work with chocolate at home.  I’d never done anything like this, but figured how hard could it be?  🙂

I also needed a project to do with my kids and Mother’s Day was around the corner.  So, I decided to kill a couple birds with one stone and dove in head first.

We were recently at Costco and purchased a pretty big bag of chocolate chips (I usually use these for cookies).  …

Sweet Petite Confections – Clairemont

Sweet Petite Confections – Clairemont

Sweet Petite Confections is a chocolate oasis fit for the strongest sweet tooth or simply a curious tongue. Michael and I played each part as we embarked on our wondrous adventure into the decadent unknown of a former fashion designer. Michele Lomelin started Sweet Petite Confections in part because she felt a little restricted when it came to the fashion world. However, chocolate has allowed her to flex her creative muscle once again. She worked in fashion design for twenty years and it shows from the very first piece of chocolate you set your eyes on.…

Farmer’s Fix

Farmer’s Fix

Farmer’s Fix is a relatively new salad delivery service in San Diego. They pride themselves on fresh, organic ingredients delivered straight to your door. Each salad is $10 and depending on how many you order, there may be a shipping charge of $6. As of now you can order 3, 4, or 5+ salads per week.

I always like opening things with food in them. Sometimes maybe I get a little too excited. But let’s just say that “rigorous testing” took place. As I was removing each of the three salads from the cute, insulated tote bag, I must have got ahead of myself and the first one slipped out of my hands.…

Harvey’s Lounge Inside the Seven Mile Casino – South Bay

Harvey’s Lounge Inside the Seven Mile Casino – South Bay

P4260014

What the… huh?!  There’s a casino in Chula Vista?

Yes, there is!  The Seven Mile Casino is just south of the 54 freeway and nestled between E & F Streets along Bay Blvd.  While the casino has been in existence for decades and had a long history in the city, this newer property we visited has only been opened for a year.

They specialize in table games such as pai gow, poker, blackjack, and several other table games.

Although tempted to play some games, we were here for the food!

P4260017

The casino is small relative to a most behemoth casinos you’ll find outside of the city limits or in Las Vegas, but that’s part of it’s charm.  …

California Pizza Kitchen – Fashion Valley

California Pizza Kitchen – Fashion Valley

Ever since my old DSLR (almost 10 years!) decided it was time to retire, I have been on a hunt for a more compact mirrorless camera I can take around whenever we eat out or when we go on vacation. The Sony a6300 had my eye and I was one Amazon click away from it being at my front door. I took a took a complete 180 and eventually settled on the Olympus OM-D E-M5. California Pizza Kitchen was the first outing I got to use my new toy and I hope to learn my way around the new controls and features soon.…

Boudin SF – Clairemont

We were recently invited to Boudin to check out their new fresh seasonal salads.  Since I haven’t been eating as many greens as I’d like lately, this was the perfect opportunity turn things around.

Boudin is a bakery and quick service restaurant that has roots in San Francisco, dating all the way back to 1849!  There are upwards of 30 locations today and a few that call San Diego County their home.  Today we were visiting the Clairemont location on the corner of Balboa Ave. and Genesee Ave.  This is the same mall that is home to 85 degrees.…
