Katsu Cafe – Kearney Mesa, San Diego

Katsu Cafe – Kearney Mesa, San Diego

Thank goodness is all I have to say.  It’s been awhile since I blasted a restaurant, but Teri Cafe was terrible in my opinion.  Granted I haven’t been there in years, but I distinctly remember their chicken was always dry and under season. So, I’m happy to report that Teri Cafe is no longer around and has been replaced with Katsu Cafe!

I’m not exactly sure when they opened since I don’t work in the area any longer, but I decided to check it out with Jorgina and the kids one day while we were furniture shopping.  …

T-Pop Desserts & More (Mira Mesa)

DSC_0050

After my friends and I attended the D6 Night Market a few months ago, I guess we weren’t done eating yet. My strategic stomach space planning didn’t factor in an extra food stop. Here I thought I was the crazed foodie. My fellow food loving peoples wanted to stop by T-Pop Desserts & More for, well…more. They were taking me somewhere I had never been before but had heard a lot about. The pictures looked great from what I saw in other reviews, so in the very least it would make for a good presentation.…

Kyoto Japanese Market – Poke Bowls

Kyoto Japanese Market – Poke Bowls

IMG_5735

Kyoto Gift & Food is a Japanese Market located just West of the 805 freeway in National City, CA.  It took us awhile to find this place because it’s touted more as a market, rather than an eatery.  However, I’d say it should be known for both.

Just inside the market there is a small room in the back which houses their sushi production.  The market is run by a nice Japanese “mom and pop”.  Inside looks like a market you might find on the Island of Maui, with lots of traditional Japanese foods, snacks, and of course sushi.…

Vessel’s Summer Menu at Kona Kai Resort, San Diego

Vessel’s Summer Menu at Kona Kai Resort, San Diego

What better way to kick off Summer than with an invitation to visit one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego – Vessel at Kona Kai Resort!  IMG_2058

We were invited to check out Chef Roy’s new Summer Tasting Menu along with a craft beer pairing.  Would it live up to the previous menu (Vessel Fall Menu Review)?
IMG_2067

First up was the 48 Hour Pork Belly – plantain powder, sweet potato spaetzle, anise, & bitter chocolate

I must say I loved the presentation.  The pork belly was tasty for sure, and it was interesting to have it spiced with anise.  …

D6 Night Market (Mira Mesa)

DSC_0001

I got a chance to go to the D6 Night Market in Mira Mesa a few weekends ago held at Mira Mesa Community Park. If there is one thing I learned about these events it’s come early if you don’t like to wait in long lines and potentially miss out on some things that may sell out. This particular night market is named after San Diego’s City Council District 6, which includes Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, MCAS Miramar, Mira Mesa, Rancho Peñasquitos-Park Village, and Sorrento Valley.

Bacon and Barrels 2015

Bacon and Barrels 2015

IMG_6940

It has been two long years since we attended a bacon inspired festival. The last time we went to Bacon Fest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the dessert inspired bacon samples far outweighed the savory ones. In moderation that’s fine, but I’d much rather have it flipped. Michael and I are not huge drinkers which meant we were here for the “bacon” part and not the “barrels.” Beware, lots of pictures in this Bacon and Barrels post.DSC_0090

It took place on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend and turned out to be a wonderful day weatherwise.…

Pillbox Tavern (Solana Beach)

DSC_0223

We were invited up to Pillbox Tavern & Grill a few weeks ago in Solana Beach. They opened their doors late last year with Chef Shelly Velez heading up the kitchen. It was a new experience for us since we rarely find ourselves up in Solana Beach. I really dig the beachy vibe I got near Pillbox Tavern. They got their name from the famous beach break down below.

Once everyone cleared out I pounced and took a picture of the bar. It isn’t a huge place, but I kind of like it that way.…

Bali Hai (Point Loma)

DSC_0173

I has been at least three years since I’ve been to Bali Hai so it was about time we were reacquainted with each other. They are known for their Pacific Rim cuisine and amazing views, being nestled on the Northern tip of Shelter Island. Another fun fact is Tom Ham of Tom Ham’s Lighthouse opened Bali Hai in 1955. They must have won the lottery for best properties on the water with a view.
