Jonty Jacobs – La Jolla

Jonty Jacobs – La Jolla

Are you a beef jerky lover? I am. Camran, one of the owners of Jonty Jacobs in La Jolla insists you’ve never had beef jerky like this before. Some things in life you just sort of accept without giving a passing thought. For me, beef jerky is one of those things. Sodium nitrates, sure, why not? Preservatives? Okay! Artificial flavors? Sign me up! But then again, I had no idea there was a tastier, healthier version out there until now. Jonty Jacobs specializes in a popular South African snack called biltong.…

San Diego Poke Company – Grantville

San Diego Poke Company – Grantville

The poke craze is here to stay. Blink twice and you might miss another shop popping up around the corner. Good thing for us fish lovers, there’s a lot of fresh seafood to be had in San Diego. With so much variety, I do not think I’ll ever get tired of it. San Diego Poke Company is a relatively new company which started out at farmer’s markets. They did so well they started a brick and mortar store a few months back. The owner, Yohei, came from a technical background but decided to shift gears and pursue something a little more fun.…

San Diego’s BEST Chicken and Steak Sandwiches EVER

San Diego’s BEST Chicken and Steak Sandwiches EVER

I’m back!

So, after a long hiatus from posting something on SDF, I thought it’d be appropriate to pay a visit and declare my love for San Diego’s BEST chicken and steak sandwiches EVER.  It’s been long overdue since we’ve probably ordered more than 100 chicken sandwiches from Chez Nous during the last decade and a half.

My favorite chicken sandwich is a non-traditional one called the Spicy Chicken Melt from Chez Nous in the Scripps Ranch area.

This little sandwich shop is a hidden gem, unassuming and tucked away in a strip mall off the Carroll Canyon Road exit.…

Char House – Kearny Mesa

Char House – Kearny Mesa

When we heard a new Vietnamese restaurant was opening in Kearny Mesa, we immediately thought to ourselves: “okay another pho place.” Boy were we wrong. They don’t call themselves Char House for nothing. I should note they also own Pho 5th Avenue in Hillcrest and look to be trying something new here with Char House.

Street Food Specials

I’ve never been to Vietnam (I hope to one day!) so I can’t reach into my bag of street food memories and reflect. But according to Tee, the owner, these are all common in Vietnam. He was very proud to be serving these and I can’t say I’ve seen any other restaurant serve the same dishes.…

Pieology – Southwest Pizzas

Pieology – Southwest Pizzas

We were recently invited to try out Pieology’s new Southwestern pizzas.

Both Darren and I were excited to check out these custom creations as quick service pizzas are still all the rage (Pieology, Project Pie, Blaze, etc.).

When we arrived, we asked to speak with the manager to let him know we were there.  Typically a manager will come over to greet us and walk us through the menu, share any new items, and provide details on any questions we ask, but he was more interested in tending to pies in the oven, rather than us.  …

Chocolate Covered Strawberries with a Few Cherries On Top

Chocolate Covered Strawberries with a Few Cherries On Top

So after a recent and super fun tasting trip to Sweet Petite Confections, I got a bit of inspiration to work with chocolate at home.  I’d never done anything like this, but figured how hard could it be?  🙂

I also needed a project to do with my kids and Mother’s Day was around the corner.  So, I decided to kill a couple birds with one stone and dove in head first.

We were recently at Costco and purchased a pretty big bag of chocolate chips (I usually use these for cookies).  …

Sweet Petite Confections – Clairemont

Sweet Petite Confections – Clairemont

Sweet Petite Confections is a chocolate oasis fit for the strongest sweet tooth or simply a curious tongue. Michael and I played each part as we embarked on our wondrous adventure into the decadent unknown of a former fashion designer. Michele Lomelin started Sweet Petite Confections in part because she felt a little restricted when it came to the fashion world. However, chocolate has allowed her to flex her creative muscle once again. She worked in fashion design for twenty years and it shows from the very first piece of chocolate you set your eyes on.…

Farmer’s Fix

Farmer’s Fix

Farmer’s Fix is a relatively new salad delivery service in San Diego. They pride themselves on fresh, organic ingredients delivered straight to your door. Each salad is $10 and depending on how many you order, there may be a shipping charge of $6. As of now you can order 3, 4, or 5+ salads per week.

I always like opening things with food in them. Sometimes maybe I get a little too excited. But let’s just say that “rigorous testing” took place. As I was removing each of the three salads from the cute, insulated tote bag, I must have got ahead of myself and the first one slipped out of my hands.…
