SNOICE in Paradise Hills, San Diego

SNOICE in Paradise Hills, San Diego

PB140260

Just prior to Thanksgiving, we made a quick trip up to Paradise Hills to check out SNOICE.

*If you look a little closer, you’ll notice my daughter just outside the front door super eager to go inside!  Somehow she knew she’d be in a for a special treat.

SNOICE specializes in snow and ice desserts traditionally found in Taiwan and the Philipines.

They have a pretty cool story.  The founders, Jayrell and Dianne, started it up as a side project of the side of Dianne’s parents’ bakery.

What started out as a pop-up dessert bar has since evolved into a full fledged storefront and viable business.  …

Musical Pairing in San Diego: Part Deux

Musical Pairing in San Diego: Part Deux

We heard that our friends Barbara and Victoria would be back in San Diego for another special Musical Pairing pop-up dinner, and we were dying to participate again.

Of course, they invited us with open arms and we knew we were back in for a treat at Ruth’s Chris Del Mar.

This time, however, would be different.  We already had a preview of what to expect last time, so the question became “would it taste different” and “how could I customize this to my own musical tastes”?

For this post, I’m not going to dig into the finite details since Darren did an excellent job with this first write up, rather I’d like to explore other options applying what I learned.  …

Brian’s 24 – Downtown

Brian’s 24 – Downtown

I used to go to the old Brian’s in Hillcrest before it closed and the space was taken over by The Great Maple. A lot has changed since then. A new family purchased Brian’s 24 in downtown. They have done quite a bit of remodeling and it looks amazing inside.

Side salad

This will be the first and last trace of a somewhat healthy dish for this entire post. I thank Michael that we got an ounce or two of vegetables on this evening.

Carne Asada Tots: a full pound of crispy tater tots topped with melted cheddar-jack cheese, diced steak, and sour cream.

The Grass Skirt Tiki Lounge

PB050049

As you may know, Darren and I are cousins.  What you may not know is that our parents were born in Hawaii.  So, we’ve got a natural affinity towards island style cuisine and themes.

Tonight we were excited to be checking out the soft opening for The Grass Skirt in Pacific Beach.  This Tiki Lounge concept is from SDCM, the same group that brought us Kettner Exchange a couple years ago.  One thing that we realized is that they love to make a great first impression!…

Sloan’s – Downtown

Sloan’s – Downtown

A new Sloan’s ice cream shop opened in May at the newly renovated Horton Plaza Park right next to, you guessed it, Horton Plaza. They have another location in the UTC mall.

The plaza is very nice and open. I’m sure they have events there and it would be cool to hang out if I worked in downtown. The only other food/beverage vendor there is Starbucks.

There’s also some semi-covered seating in front which is great for those hot sunny days when you do not want your ice cream to instantly melt.…

Encontro – North Park, San Diego

Encontro North Park

Encontro in North Park, San Diego, is a fun and inventive food and drink destination.

They just opened up earlier this year (2016), but have already begun to build a nice following.

The name “Encontro” is meant to evoke feelings of discovery or encountering new things.

The restaurant is well laid out with a super friendly staff.  They serve a lot of craft beers and even several specialty sodas for the non-alcoholic drinkers like me.  🙂

You can’t see it in this picture, but there is a nice open window area that you can sit and people watch.…

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood – Hillcrest

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood – Hillcrest

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood has been on my list forever. I blame TJ Oyster Bar for being too damn good to pull me away for even one visit. One weekend I somehow convinced Anh to come with me and give Oscar’s a shot.

We tried our best to mimic what we normally get at TJ Oyster Bar. I tend to favor the fish ceviche.

One of the many reasons why I love TJ so much is their unabashed approach to what I call “lime drenching.” Yes their ceviche is super sour and I can’t get enough of it.…

Locol – Oakland

Locol – Oakland

One thing about Anh and I is we like us some cheap food. As long as it’s good, we good. I do enjoy nicer sit down restaurants too, but in my world it can be hard to beat a sub $10 delicious meal and Locol in Oakland could potentially deliver that to me. That’s kind of what spurred me to contribute to the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign last year. Cheap, accessible, local, good food was what I was hoping to see from Locol in Oakland and LA. I also got a nice hip t-shirt to show off.…
