Family House of Pancakes

Family House of Pancakes

A year later and I’m still exploring all the little nooks in the South Bay.  One place that we’ve gone to a couple times is Family House of Pancakes.  It’s a solid, old school, pancake house with no frills.  But, their food is served piping hot and delicious!

On our most recent trip with our family, I decided to try their coconut waffle (they have a Belgium option too).  It was a decent size and plenty of coconut and powered sugar to satisfy my morning sweet tooth.  Like most breakfast places, the waffles and pancakes are served with whipped butter.  …

Harry’s Coffee Shop (La Jolla)

Harry’s Coffee Shop (La Jolla)

My apologies.  I didn’t do something I meant to last time…Happy New Year! Silly silly me.  Hope the people that make New Years resolutions are successful so far.  2014 is going to be a dusey!  On to Harry’s Coffee Shop. Harry’s is located right on Girard Ave. in La Jolla.  I must have passed it a million times without noticing it.  I’m glad we got to see firsthand what a typical morning service is like, and perhaps what it’s been like since 1960.  Yes they’ve been around a long time and even have a parking lot out back.…

DZ Akins

DZ Akins

So I’ve been watching a lot of Man Vs. Food lately and Adam seemed to hit a lot of deli’s on his various food journeys across the country. So my stomach had a longing for deli meat. I hadn’t been to DZ Akins in quite some time so my light bulb went off and we were on our way to satisfy the need of the day in sunny San Diego.

The menu is huge here. It reminds me of Jerry’s Famous Deli back in LA but retains the old school, mom and pop, this place is dirty and you like it feel.…

Hat’s off to The Hat

Hat’s off to The Hat

I first encountered The Hat 15 years ago.  My Dad wanted to grab a quick bite, and said he knew of a little sandwich shop that had the best pastrami.  Sure, why not?  I was expecting a basic pastrami that was dry, salted, and coupled with some rye bread.  Boy, was I wrong!  Wrapped carefully in yellow paper was a pastrami sandwich from Heaven.  Nestled in a fresh roll were mounds of thinly sliced pastrami drenched in au jus.  It was perfectly salted and super moist!  Simple, savory, and delicious… mmmm.…

Tops!

Tops!

My car took me to Tops recently in Pasadena and I just had to post my discoveries. There is a growing debate amongst my family between The Hat or Tops and after this experience, I am siding with the Tops contingent. Let me explain why.

Kobe beef dip sandwich. If you like french dip sandwiches, what happens when you substitute the beef with kobe beef? You get a sandwich with kobe beef! That’s what. No vegetables, no fancy condiments, just straight forward bread, kobe, and dipping sauce. The portion was a pretty decent size.…
