Darren and I recently joined a San Diego Media dinner hosted by the Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island. The Kona Kai recently completed a $22 million overhaul of the resort and revamped their flagship restaurant, Vessel. Vessel includes a 360-degree bar with sweeping views of San Diego’s beautiful bay front. The interior has been brushed with a vibrant sea foam green against distressed wood throughout. I found the overall ambiance to be upscale, relaxing, and inviting. Vessel is now headed by Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson. As a native Southern Californian who has traveled and lived abroad in Europe, Chef Roy brings years of diverse experience and inspiration to his food and does his best to share that gift with this patrons.…Read more
Michael and I were invited to try Solare over at Liberty Station. Slater’s 50/50 and Con Pane are a stone’s throw away from Solare. About a year and a half ago, Randy Smerik purchased Solare and brought on Chef Accursio Lota from Sicily to run the kitchen. Chef Accursio is a former Marine Room chef and previously hosted a Limone pop up with his wife here in San Diego.
There is outdoor dining in the front as well as the side of the restaurant pictured above.
Inside you will find additional seating for small or large parties.…Read more

Finally we made it to another Malarkey restaurant! So far Anh and I have been to Searsucker, Gingham, and now Gabardine crossed off the list. I used to go to Oceanaire when Chef Brian grazed the kitchen before his Top Chef days and have been a fan of his ever since. The food industry is a funny thing now with celebrity chefs or tv chefs becoming more celebrity than chef. Could his vision be executed without him in the kitchen?
Believe it or not, this was the Clam Chowder. There was bacon, corn, potatoes, and a few clams with shells in there. …Read more
