Darren and I had just finished up a great meal tonight at Un Mundo (review coming soon) when we noticed a sign across the street in the adjacent shopping center…. Lil’ Dipper.  Since I always have a second stomach for dessert, we decided to walk across to check it out.  (It was National Dessert Day after all!)

We were immediately greeted by two friendly woman, Barb (the President) and Susan (VP of Communications & Strategy) who welcomed us in with open arms, “Want to try some samples?”

YES!…

It’s funny because my first D Bar experience wasn’t actually in San Diego. A year after they opened in San Diego in 2012 I was on a trip with Anh to Colorado. I received a lot of advice on Chowhound and one of the places we stopped by was the original D Bar in Denver. They have since relocated to a bigger space in Denver. I didn’t realize the D Bar in San Diego was under the same ownership as the D Bar in Denver until after we got back from our trip.…

Kona Kai – VESSEL Restaurant, San Diego

Fotor010200296Darren and I recently joined a San Diego Media dinner hosted by the Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island.  The Kona Kai recently completed a $22 million overhaul of the resort and revamped their flagship restaurant, Vessel.  Vessel includes a 360-degree bar with sweeping views of San Diego’s beautiful bay front.  The interior has been brushed with a vibrant sea foam green against distressed wood throughout.  I found the overall ambiance to be upscale, relaxing, and inviting.  Vessel is now headed by Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson.  As a native Southern Californian who has traveled and lived abroad in Europe, Chef Roy brings years of diverse experience and inspiration to his food and does his best to share that gift with this patrons.…

First up was the Milk Chocolate Waffle Crunch Bar – Chocolate was smooth, creamy, and sweet.  I enjoyed the bits of waffle interlaced throughout the bar, although I would have preferred the pieces to be a bit larger for a more pronounced texture.…

D-Bar (Hillcrest)

So, I have a little bit of a sweet tooth. Okay, I have a large sweet tooth (and the fillings to prove it). So when I was perusing the Restaurant Week Menus one item stood out to me, the “Cake and Shake” at D-Bar. Yes, it is quite simply and slice of cake and a shake.

I made a trip to Hillcrest specifically to try this combination and I am SO glad I did. D-Bar is a modern looking place that focuses on high-end desserts, similar to Extraordinary Desserts, but less gold foil.  …
