We were invited to try Spotted Cow Viet Kitchen in the Zion Market off of Clairemont Mesa Blvd. the other day. It is located in the right hand corner of the food court area.

Maybe it was my false assumption but I had thought our experience was going to mirror Chipotle where you pick and choose different things to add to create your own bowl of pho. I don’t know where I got that notion, but it turned out to be more of an assembly line where you choose a bowl and they put it together for you.…

Jin’s Pot (Kearny Mesa)

Jin’s Pot (Kearny Mesa)

I noticed a new place pop up on the backside of a shopping mall on Convoy where China Max resides. That place is called Jin’s Pot.

They have various lunch specials for $7.99. I asked the waitress what she recommended and she told me to get the Pork Rice Noodle Soup. Don’t you love it when they get straight to the point and don’t list everything on the menu as being their favorite? Easy ordering atmosphere. Check.

It came out super hot with a soulful aroma. When it was set on the table we realized there was a spicy component which we didn’t know about beforehand.…

China Quik Wok

China Quik Wok

China Quik Wok is a tiny restaurant tucked away into a commercial shopping center close to the intersection of Balboa and Genesee.  (Also the same mall as Nazca Grill.)

I decided to try this place out as I heard they had knife cut noodles.

The modest inside was no frills, but I liked that you could see the cooks in the back preparing the food.

Seats were a bit hard.

There weren’t a lot of people when we got there, but the place filled out by the time we left.  There are tables and a bar area that face the kitchen.

The first thing we tried was the Chicken Karage.  The portion size was decent and the chicken was crispy and hot.  I would definitely get it again.

We also tried out the softshell crab roll.  …

Gaijin Noodle and Sake House (Gaslamp Quarter) Restaurant Week

Gaijin Noodle and Sake House (Gaslamp Quarter) Restaurant Week

I’m going to be honest, when I want noodles I go to Convoy, but after seeing Gaijin’s extensive tasting menu I took a leap. Nestled in the Gaslamp Quarter, it seems rather unassuming, but inside the doors is a modern, minimalist, good-time restaurant.

First up for my starter was the Pork Carnitas Bao with red rock sugar. Delicious.  The red rock sugar added an extra textural element, some crunch if you will. I love bao buns, so the soft bun, spicy sauce and crunchy pickles did not disappoint.

Second course was Yakitori, little skewers of tastiness.…
