I was bored one day and caught an old episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on tv. It happened to be the San Diego episode which I had seen before, but I couldn’t remember all the places he visited. Funny thing is the show contacted us back then asking if we knew of any bizarre food destinations in San Diego. We weren’t of much use to them and couldn’t think of anything truly bizarre that we frequented in SD. One of the places he made his way down to try was Tortas Ahogadas, a food truck located in a Toys R Us parking lot off of the 5 freeway in Chula Vista.…Read more
It has been two long years since we attended a bacon inspired festival. The last time we went to Bacon Fest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the dessert inspired bacon samples far outweighed the savory ones. In moderation that’s fine, but I’d much rather have it flipped. Michael and I are not huge drinkers which meant we were here for the “bacon” part and not the “barrels.” Beware, lots of pictures in this Bacon and Barrels post.
It took place on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend and turned out to be a wonderful day weatherwise.…Read more
The Whole Hog opened a few months ago and we got a chance to stop by to see what they are cooking. It is on Park Blvd., south of Big Front Door and Cafe on Park. I’m not much of a sandwich person, but recently Supernatural Sandwiches and Big Front Door have brought me new found joy for the art of the sandwich.
We like our sweet tea half sweet, just like we order our boba.…Read more
Michael and I stopped by Fat Sal’s over in Pacific Beach a few weeks ago. Fat Sal’s is a sandwich restaurant that started in Los Angeles. One of the owners is Jerry Ferrara (actor from Entourage). They have three restaurants open now with plans to open more in the near future. We did a short Q & A with them which you can find at the end of the post.
We opted to sit in the patio out back which had long benches and a bunch of large flat screens above.…Read more
It was way back in 2011 when Jorgina posted about Azucar in Ocean Beach. Can’t believe it has been that long. We haven’t had a follow up post since then, so what better time than now!? It doesn’t hurt that they hopped on the cronuts train and serve their very own “craynuts” as they like to call them, every Monday at 12:00pm sharp. Anh and I have been on a mission to try our very own first cronut, but Paris Baguette has failed us a few times by selling out too fast. …Read more
Because pork makes everything better.
One of the things that I love most about food is that it’s a fun subject that you can talk about to basically anybody. The conversation usually flows and by the end of it you’ll probably be starving. Fact. But it is even better when you run into foodies like you, with a whole lot to add to your life, and delicious new spices to share.
Following one of those delicious tips, I decided to go check Carnitas’ Snack Shack. (Darren reviewed it a while back) You don’t know it?…Read more
Hello everyone. How’s everyone loving this rain!?! Okay, it’s not that exciting. But I think I’ve come across something to make the thought of that wet sock go away. The Promiscuous Fork! They opened earlier this year in an unassuming strip mall situated next to a liquor store. But hold your horses, they serve beer and wine so you don’t have to get out of your chair just yet. Let’s take a look at the menu they served when Anh and I went.
Sorry I couldn’t get a picture of the whole menu. …Read more
Although Michael and Darren frequent the Liberty Station shopping area near Point Loma, I have never been. This was my first time was to Con Pane and it was a perfect sunny San Diego day to go out for lunch.
When we arrived, there was a small line of people waiting to get their lunch.
I studied every item on the menu closely, and I decided on the Roasted Turkey Sandwich. Oh, but wait, it’s not just deciding which sandwich you want. It’s also choosing what kind of bread you would like for your sandwich to be made of.…
