Brian’s 24 – Downtown

Brian’s 24 – Downtown

I used to go to the old Brian’s in Hillcrest before it closed and the space was taken over by The Great Maple. A lot has changed since then. A new family purchased Brian’s 24 in downtown. They have done quite a bit of remodeling and it looks amazing inside.

Side salad

This will be the first and last trace of a somewhat healthy dish for this entire post. I thank Michael that we got an ounce or two of vegetables on this evening.

Carne Asada Tots: a full pound of crispy tater tots topped with melted cheddar-jack cheese, diced steak, and sour cream.

Del Mar Gourmet Food Truck Festival

Del Mar Gourmet Food Truck Festival

Food Truck Fest

Food truck gatherings are nothing new, but the amount of participating food trucks can make all the difference. The Gourmet Food Truck Festival at the Del Mar Racetrack is one of the larger gatherings we’ve been to. They had close to 40 different food trucks to choose from. This particular event took place last month on a sunny and sizzling San Diego Saturday afternoon. In our eyes, the more the better so we can try as much as we can from food trucks all over Southern California without actually driving to each one.…

Tortas Ahogadas (Chula Vista)

I was bored one day and caught an old episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on tv. It happened to be the San Diego episode which I had seen before, but I couldn’t remember all the places he visited. Funny thing is the show contacted us back then asking if we knew of any bizarre food destinations in San Diego. We weren’t of much use to them and couldn’t think of anything truly bizarre that we frequented in SD. One of the places he made his way down to try was Tortas Ahogadas, a food truck located in a Toys R Us parking lot off of the 5 freeway in Chula Vista.…

Bacon and Barrels 2015

Bacon and Barrels 2015

IMG_6940

It has been two long years since we attended a bacon inspired festival. The last time we went to Bacon Fest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the dessert inspired bacon samples far outweighed the savory ones. In moderation that’s fine, but I’d much rather have it flipped. Michael and I are not huge drinkers which meant we were here for the “bacon” part and not the “barrels.” Beware, lots of pictures in this Bacon and Barrels post.DSC_0090

It took place on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend and turned out to be a wonderful day weatherwise.…

The Whole Hog (San Diego)

The Whole Hog opened a few months ago and we got a chance to stop by to see what they are cooking. It is on Park Blvd., south of Big Front Door and Cafe on Park. I’m not much of a sandwich person, but recently Supernatural Sandwiches and Big Front Door have brought me new found joy for the art of the sandwich.

There’s seating for about twenty people inside with tables and bar seating along the wall.

Fat Sal’s (Pacific Beach)

Michael and I stopped by Fat Sal’s over in Pacific Beach a few weeks ago.  Fat Sal’s is a sandwich restaurant that started in Los Angeles.  One of the owners is Jerry Ferrara (actor from Entourage). They have three restaurants open now with plans to open more in the near future.  We did a short Q & A with them which you can find at the end of the post.

We opted to sit in the patio out back which had long benches and a bunch of large flat screens above.…

Cronuts! A Revisit to Azucar (Ocean Beach)

Cronuts! A Revisit to Azucar (Ocean Beach)

DSC_1053

It was way back in 2011 when Jorgina posted about Azucar in Ocean Beach.  Can’t believe it has been that long.  We haven’t had a follow up post since then, so what better time than now!?  It doesn’t hurt that they hopped on the cronuts train and serve their very own “craynuts” as they like to call them, every Monday at 12:00pm sharp.  Anh and I have been on a mission to try our very own first cronut, but Paris Baguette has failed us a few times by selling out too fast.  …

Carnitas’ Snack Shack (North Park)

Carnitas’ Snack Shack (North Park)

Carnitas 1

Because pork makes everything better.

One of the things that I love most about food is that it’s a fun subject that you can talk about to basically anybody. The conversation usually flows and by the end of it you’ll probably be starving. Fact. But it is even better when you run into foodies like you, with a whole lot to add to your life, and delicious new spices to share.

Following one of those delicious tips, I decided to go check Carnitas’ Snack Shack. (Darren reviewed it a while back) You don’t know it?…
