Jonty Jacobs – La Jolla

Jonty Jacobs – La Jolla

Are you a beef jerky lover? I am. Camran, one of the owners of Jonty Jacobs in La Jolla insists you’ve never had beef jerky like this before. Some things in life you just sort of accept without giving a passing thought. For me, beef jerky is one of those things. Sodium nitrates, sure, why not? Preservatives? Okay! Artificial flavors? Sign me up! But then again, I had no idea there was a tastier, healthier version out there until now. Jonty Jacobs specializes in a popular South African snack called biltong.…

San Francisco Food Crawl

San Francisco Food Crawl

Tis the season and we haven’t posted in a looooong time.  But we’re back with another fun filled installment of San Diego Food dot neat! I ventured into San Francisco about a month ago with Anh and we decided we would make the trip worth our while. Once our brunch destination was set up with some friends at Mission Beach Cafe, our next task was to see how many places were within walking distance we could tackle. Since we were walking it all off, the act of stuffing our selves silly did not phase us (in the psychological sense).…

Daddy’s Hot Dogs Revisit (Hillcrest)

Daddy’s Hot Dogs Revisit (Hillcrest)

IMG_4531

Daddy’s Hot Dogs has been serving some of the best hot dogs San Diego has ever seen since the end of 2011. The place isn’t huge, nor does it have a lot of decor. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. William is a serious chef and stands by his dogs. In fact, he almost has as much pride in his dogs as he does his kids! We visited him early on when he first opened and try to come back as often as we can to see how he’s doing, and of course to see what he’s been cooking.…

Farvs Pickles

Farvs Pickles

Happy Holidays! Do you have a pickle lover in your family? Are you cramming in holiday shopping like everyone else? Maybe you can pick up some of Farvs Pickles locally before it’s too late!

I love pickles. Actually, I love almost anything pickled. Kimchi, pickles, carrots, daikon, you name it. Over the last year Anh has been making a huge batch of pickled carrots and jalapenos with garlic every few months. It sits comfortably in the back right corner of our refrigerator next to our constant supply of kimchi. So when Jarod Farver of Farvs Pickles contacted us asking if we had tried his pickles, the pickle fan boy in me was about to explode.…

Designer Whey

Designer Whey

Designer Whey sent us over a package of their various whey protein products and we attempted to replicate some of their recipes found on their website. There was a time I was incorporating different types of protein in my diet when I was working out a lot. That was a long time ago. Since this isn’t a fitness or nutrition driven blog I’ll focus on the taste, as my tongue happens to be a much more powerful muscle than say my abs lately. Here is a little snippet from the Designer Whey website if you are unfamiliar with whey:

Your body has different needs for different situations.

True Gentlemen’s Jerky Q&A

True Gentlemen’s Jerky Q&A

IMG_6864

After a successfully funded kickstarter campaign, True Gentlemen’s Jerky is ready to grow their business one tasty morsel at a time. It all started in college with an old family recipe. They received an overwhelming response from their friends and family and soon realized there was a business opportunity in front of them. Their goal is to provide a high quality, healthy snack that is often lacking nowadays with mass produced jerky. Currently they have two flavors: Original Peppered and Sinsa Korean BBQ. We got a chance to conduct a Q&A with them and here’s how it all went down:

Tell me how the idea for the business came about.

Robeks Juice – Dennis Sato

Robeks Juice – Dennis Sato

Hello everyone!

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend.  Christmas is coming up along with 2012 close behind, but there’s still plenty of food and drinks to be covered in 2011!  Last week we had a very unique opportunity to sample the original creation of Dennis Sato at his Mira Mesa Robeks location.  Big thanks to Jan and Dennis for having us.  It’s called the smoothie bowl.  Anh and I weren’t sure what to expect entering the Robeks store, but Dennis came up front and started giving us his grand tour. …
