Great Oak Steakhouse at the Pechanga Resort & Casino – Temecula

Great Oak Steakhouse at the Pechanga Resort & Casino – Temecula

We were invited to dine at The Great Oak Steakhouse, one of the 11 restaurants at Pechanga Resort & Casino. Even though I often hear the name Pechanga all over the place, I don’t think I’ve ever stepped foot in the casino. It’s weird because I’ve been to just about every other casino San Diego has to offer. They had the Chinese New Year decorations in full effect and it made me happy.

The casino itself is a lot larger than I had imagined. We managed to walk around and quickly found the entrance to the Great Oak Steakhouse.…

California Pizza Kitchen – Fashion Valley

California Pizza Kitchen – Fashion Valley

Ever since my old DSLR (almost 10 years!) decided it was time to retire, I have been on a hunt for a more compact mirrorless camera I can take around whenever we eat out or when we go on vacation. The Sony a6300 had my eye and I was one Amazon click away from it being at my front door. I took a took a complete 180 and eventually settled on the Olympus OM-D E-M5. California Pizza Kitchen was the first outing I got to use my new toy and I hope to learn my way around the new controls and features soon.…

Musical Pairing Pop Up Dinner At Ruth’s Chris

Musical Pairing Pop Up Dinner At Ruth’s Chris

Does food taste better when accompanied by music? Our goal for one evening was to explore our senses a little bit further to see if pairing food with music enhances the overall dining experience. Everyone has listened to music during a meal at one point or another. Have you ever found yourself bouncing to the beat of a song in a restaurant, enjoying every last bite? Fodor’s Guide named them one of the “2015 Top Ten Can’t Miss Pop-Up Restaurants Experiences.” To help guide us through our meal was Barbara Werner, the architect behind Musical Pairing.…

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more beautiful San Diego Bay view than the one Tom Ham’s Lighthouse enjoys.  Situated at the North end of Harbor Island (across from the SD Airport), Tom Ham’s is perched serenely against the San Diego Bay with breathtaking 270 degree waterfront views.  I’ve been here a couple times before for Sunday brunch a few years ago (which I have great memories of), but today’s lunch invitation was certainly one to be remembered.IMG_4219

I got to the restaurant 15 minutes early before meeting Darren here, so I decided to take a quick stroll and soak in the perfect day (73 degrees with a slight breeze).…

Acqua Al 2 – Downtown San Diego, Gaslamp

I was 27 the first time I had the privilege of visiting Florence, Italy.  What a wonder place full of rich Renaissance history, beautiful works of art, and a love for life!  It’s no wonder that restaurateur, Martin Gonzales, fell in love with Florence.  In fact, he took the additional step to move there and immerse himself in their culture.  After successfully completing culinary school there and working under Master Chef Innocenti, he took the initiative to bring Acqua Al 2’s first sister restaurant stateside. Luckily for us, he decided to land in San Diego first!…

We don’t normally get to downtown very often. Lately though, Michael and I have been honing our skills in finding the best parking spots downtown has to offer. On this trip we’d visit and get to know a restaurant we have seen many times, but never dined at before. Partly because it just never occurred to me to try “that” restaurant that sits right across the street from the convention center. Lou and Mickey’s is easy to spot next to the Gaslamp Quarter sign, with its lights shining brightly over 5th ave.…

Duck Dive (Pacific Beach)

Duck Dive (Pacific Beach)

Shortly after Darren and Michael took in all Pacific Beach Fish Shop has to offer, Jenna and I made our way a little deeper into PB. Along the beachfront are a ton of bars and restaurants worthy of some special attention. Everything from the dirtiest dive to the most elegant cuisine is right here along Mission Blvd. Duck Dive, an open air bar and grill is smack in the middle of both the street and the budget.

They are currently offering a $20 lunch menu and $45 dinner, both of which are an excellent opportunity to see what Cowboy Star does best. Their motto is “Rough and rugged yet polished and elegant” and they have perfected that outlook. Nowhere else in San Diego will you find black tie wait staff with giant cowboy belt buckles.

Cowboy Star is best known for its protein, particularly beef, which can be purchased a la carte from the attached butcher shop to prepare at home.…
