Kyoto Japanese Market – Poke Bowls

Kyoto Japanese Market – Poke Bowls

IMG_5735

Kyoto Gift & Food is a Japanese Market located just West of the 805 freeway in National City, CA.  It took us awhile to find this place because it’s touted more as a market, rather than an eatery.  However, I’d say it should be known for both.

Just inside the market there is a small room in the back which houses their sushi production.  The market is run by a nice Japanese “mom and pop”.  Inside looks like a market you might find on the Island of Maui, with lots of traditional Japanese foods, snacks, and of course sushi.…

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar (San Diego)

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar (San Diego)

DSC_0001

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar has made its way down to San Diego and we visited them a few weeks ago on a random Tuesday afternoon at 1:30pm thinking we wouldn’t have to wait. Wrong answer, try again. Okay thirty minutes isn’t that bad, especially since we were in for a sensory overload experience. It looks like Kula has over 300 locations mostly in Japan with seven of them in and around the Los Angeles area. They specialize in a conveyor belt that loops throughout the dining area(right next to each table) and into the kitchen.…

Shizuoka Revisit (La Mesa)

Shizuoka Revisit (La Mesa)

We’ve been going to Shizuoka out in La Mesa for quite some time now for its good and cheap Japanese bento box offerings, Oyako Don, and Udon. At the end of 2014 they had an ownership change and the family that owned it decided to retire. Now there seems to be a shift between hot plates to a more sushi centered menu, although they do still serve many of the old items.

Anh was in the mood for noodles so she ordered the Yakisoba combo with California Roll, Gyoza, and a side salad.…

Saiko Sushi – Northpark, San Diego

Saiko Sushi – Northpark, San Diego

Dare I say it?  I WILL.  Tonight’s dinner wins for my best meal of 2015 so far.  Saiko Sushi delivered quality on all fronts – excellent ingredients, service, and even the prices are very reasonable for a sushi restaurant of this caliber.

Saiko Sushi is located in Northpark, just off University and West of 30th St.  “Saiko” in Japanese is translated as “best or highest”.  It’s a pretty bold claim, but one that they focus on meticulously every night.  We were invited to check them out as this Northpark location just opened up recently.  …

Yoshino Japanese Deli – San Diego Poke Bowls

Yoshino Japanese Deli – San Diego Poke Bowls

During a recent stay-cation in North County, we were lucky enough to stumble upon a great little spot called Yoshino’s Japanese Deli.

I guess you could say they are the epitome of a great “hole in the wall”.

IMG_3088

Their tiny space is simple and to the point, but their production of flavors are huge!

IMG_3082

They specialize in Poke Bowls, or simply put, “Sushi Rice Bowls”.  They have several types of poke bowls to choose from which are built around of tuna, salmon, spicy tuna, spicy crab, masago, avocado, and seaweed salad.  …

Goody’s Sushi

Goody’s Sushi

I must admit, living further South these days makes it a bit more challenging to find great San Diego food without driving 20+ minutes.  Thankfully, we just found Goody’s Sushi and Grill and it’s not too far away in National City.

Goody’s is located in a simple strip mall and the inside is simple and quaint.  I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but once food started arriving I got more and more excited.

We started off with the garlic edamame.  It was incredibly tasty and the carmelized garlic really made the flavors pop.  …

Tokyo Sushi Loha (Rolando)

Tokyo Sushi Loha (Rolando)

IMG_0496

The new Tokyo Sushi location opened in October last year and is only a few blocks down the street from its previous, smaller location off of El Cajon Blvd.

IMG_0502

It is definitely much more spacious inside than the last location. It is clean and modernized with a lot of glowing blue colors. Tokyo Sushi Loha is perhaps best known for its loud music at night, permeating each crevice of the restaurant. I noticed there were two separate eating areas. We came for lunch when it was quiet and low key. But I’m guessing one of the wings they keep toned down a bit at night for those that don’t want to experience the club atmosphere.…

Jump Tokyo (Mission Valley)

Jump Tokyo (Mission Valley)

This place has always been there but for some reason I avoided it like the plague. Well today was the day I decided I was going to stare plague right in the face and risk bad sushi.

The interior was very spacious and it wasn’t very crowded during the normal busy lunch hour to my delight. The waitress was courteous and came to our table throughout the meal to check on us. I was craving sushi so I thought the sushi special would be a good start. For $7.95 you get a spicy tuna roll, miso soup, and three pieces of sushi (chef’s choice).…
