The Haven – Kensington

The Haven – Kensington

Happy New Year! 2017 already? How many times will I write 2016 until 2017 will feel right? Anyways, I hope 2017 brings you better food, better drink, and more of each of them. 🙂

The Haven has been in Kensington since 2013. I went with one of my friends a few years ago, but have not had a chance to come back since. When that much time has passed it’s almost like trying a new place.

The holiday decorations were in full swing and it’s a smaller, but not cramped restaurant.…

Happy 4th of July weekend! Hope everyone enjoys it and gets to do something fun! Speaking of fun, Michael and I attended a Wine and Beer Tasting at the Welk Resorts up in Escondido last week. While we aren’t huge drinkers as you may know, that never stops us from enjoying a carefully planned menu and appreciating the pairings.

This event was unique in that we were invited to spend the night at the resort. It was the first time I had ever stepped foot on the property while Michael had come here years ago.…

Events events events! There are a ton of things going on in San Diego this time of year. We got invited to attend The Wedge in Escondido which focuses on local eats, cheese, beer, and wine. There are going to be 25+ cheese and food vendors and 15+ beer and wine vendors for your eating and drinking pleasure. Since we’ve never been to this one before and don’t get a chance to head up to that area often, we figured this would be a good opportunity!

The street festival is located on Grand Ave.…

Michael and I were invited to try Solare over at Liberty Station. Slater’s 50/50 and Con Pane are a stone’s throw away from Solare. About a year and a half ago, Randy Smerik purchased Solare and brought on Chef Accursio Lota from Sicily to run the kitchen. Chef Accursio is a former Marine Room chef and previously hosted a Limone pop up with his wife here in San Diego.

Celebrity Chefs

Karl Klein, Olympic Training Center

Offered a lean Salmon Burger on a Brioche Bun with a zesty Asian Slaw. Fantastic. This is a great example of how to incorporate creamy into a burger without losing the acidity. After that burger, I think I need to start training for the Olympics so I can taste more of his masterfully crafted food. Also, he is well-grounded and a personable chef who loves his craft.

Lance Repp, La Valencia

Hands down, my favorite of the day, a homemade Sweet Pea, Spinach and Goat Cheese Ravioli served in a Morel Mushroom and Parmesan broth.…
