Korean Fish and Chips?? I’m sold.

You can immediately tell that Chef John and his wife take pride in their establishment.  There are very courteous and checked with each customer to see if they were okay after receiving their order.  It appears that they are of Korean descent, but their fish and chips took me back to good memories in the U.K!  Crispy, flaky, and full of flavor… mmmmm.  It was definitely worth the trek out to Lemon Grove.

As you can see, the piece of fish spans the entire length of the basket.  The batter was light (though a touch too oily) and the fish moist and delicious.  I ordered mine with clam strips which were decent.  However, being that I just went to Maine a year ago, I suppose I am spoiled.  It wasn’t bad, but the clam strips were a bit too chewy for  my liking.

My wife ordered the combo plate that had a piece of fish, 3 shrimp, 2 scallops, and 2 oysters.  The shrimp were super flavorful, but once again a bit too oily.  The oysters were whole and deep in flavor, but can’t compare to New Orleans.  However, the scallops were a special treat!!

Piping hot, the scallops had a very fresh flavor.  The meat was sweet and perfectly complimented by the light, but flavorful batter.  This time the coating was just right.  Not too oily here!  I think the scallop won hands down, followed closely by the fish.

Here’s the oyster.  The wify seemed to like it, but oyster guts are a bit too pungent for me.

I loved the fact that Chef John’s provided any and all sauces I would want.  Finally I didn’t have to ask for more of any one sauce.  It was just all there!

Based on some of Chef John’s pictures he had hanging on the walls, we could tell he formerly worked in a more formal culinary setting.  And while this new setting is more humble, he and his wife have preserved the most important quality – TASTE!  Sometimes simple things are the best.  You have a delicious and good thing going here Chef John.  Keep up the great work!
