DZ Akins

So I’ve been watching a lot of Man Vs. Food lately and Adam seemed to hit a lot of deli’s on his various food journeys across the country. So my stomach had a longing for deli meat. I hadn’t been to DZ Akins in quite some time so my light bulb went off and we were on our way to satisfy the need of the day in sunny San Diego.

The menu is huge here. It reminds me of Jerry’s Famous Deli back in LA but retains the old school, mom and pop, this place is dirty and you like it feel. I couldn’t decide what to get so I got the pastrami, turkey, corned beef sandwich. It came with bread and I decided on potato salad. There were also pickles in a container on the table. I’m not sure if they ever check or change that because each pickle tasted different. I want to say some tasted old…but anyways, onto the meat. This was exactly what I needed. A huge stack of deli meat. I got jealous watching Man Vs. Food and this made it all go away quickly. The sandwich did not go away as fast as the jealousy. But I did take it down in its entirety in true Man Vs. Food style. Quantity in this instance was quality and I couldn’t have been happier. I just wish I didn’t eat one of those pickles...

Breakfast for dinner! Yes sir, yes sir indeed. The Western Omelette. Ham, cheese, onions, green peppers with a healthy serving of hash browns. This tasted really good as well and you can’t really go wrong with the choice. No complaints at all. There was enough food to keep you full, enough of that breakfast flavor to make you smile, and hash browns! Sometimes the hash browns come out burnt when the cut of potato is so large but they managed to finish them nicely. Enough salt and ketchup on the side to keep it rolling makes me one happy camper.

Overall, I would like to tackle other items on the menu such as the corned beef hash and eggs and the Mish Mash (Chicken broth with 1 matzo ball, 1 kreplach, noodles, and carrots). They also have some yummy drinks to try for dessert. Mmmmmm…DZ Akins…till we meet again.

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
