The B Spot/Babs (Kearny Mesa)

Our recent updates are all about new restaurants. So Michael and I have been trying at least two new places in the last month or so in an effort to expand our “go to list.” This time our journey brought us to a relatively new sandwich shop in the same shopping mall as Tofu House and Tapioca Express on Convoy. It resides where Green Tea House used to be.

Upon entering it looked like a completely different space as the previous establishment. It was fairly modern/minimalistic and seemed pretty clean. It was clear after spending a few minutes perusing the menu that there was one item on the board we had to try. The owner up front confirmed this and encouraged us to order it. Michael and I almost made the silly mistake of ordering two of these. I’d like to introduce you to the B-B-Beast!

As I was about to order, reason that normally fades quickly when given two or more food options somehow hit me. Perhaps it was the order that came up before us that looked an awful lot like what the B-B-Beast sounded like. A heaping pile of corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, cheese, coleslaw, fries, tomatoes, and bread. That reason I spoke of previously made me put my wallet back into my pocket and decide to share the B-B-Beast with Michael.

As you gaze upon this monster of a sandwich you may ask yourself a few questions. Does it taste good? Did they get the ratio of all the ingredients correct? Was it too messy? Can one person eat it? Would you go back to try anything else besides the B-B-Beast? Yes it did taste good. I think the ratio was a little off, but that could be because I resorted to a slice and dice approach after a short while of struggling to put the thing in my mouth. If you aren’t ready to get your hands dirty here, you don’t belong. If I wanted to be sick afterward I could probably finish. And yes, I would try many other things on the menu. The owner seemed really nice and gave us some insight on some of the difficult menu decisions he faced when opening the restaurant. Overall, I had a great experience and I would certainly go back to say hi and try something new.

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
