Polite Provisions plus Soda & Swine

(Michael and Darren here – we’d like to introduce to you our newest SDF foodie contributor, Fabiana!  Fabiana comes to us all the way from Brazil and loves food just as much as the rest of us.  Here is her first post.  We think you’ll enjoy it and look forward to more soon!)

Politely presenting.

I always say that food is so much more than just a necessity. It is a way to experiment and learn about different cultures. And trust me, there’s always something new to try.

When I started writing about it, it was overwhelming. So much to say in just a few words. Now, the way I see it is like composing a symphony: of ingredients, flavors, spices and smells.

It is fascinating how much you can learn about somebody through their eating habits and preferences. For this first article, I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself. So, I figured that there was no better way than talking about two of my favorite places in San Diego.

And now you are probably thinking why am I going to mention two different places. Let’s put it like that..it’s like salt and pepper, eggs and bacon, popcorn and champagne, beer and football, made for each other. One is a bar, one is a restaurant. Sharing the same area but with different personalities, a couple with a perfect relationship.

Erick Castro offers San Diego a different approach on drinks with the recently opened Polite Provisions. After the success of Craft & Commerce, Neighborhood and UnderBelly, he launches a place that claims to serve local tonics and cures. And it does, curing ourselves from boredom and offering delicious elixirs, in a comforting atmosphere. On the menu, beers, wine and even cocktails on draft, punch bowls, housemade sodas, and more.
Highlight: One of their spirited cocktails and my favorite is Ocean Side. Made with London Dry Gin, fresh lime juice, organic mint, sea salt and celery bitters, it has a refreshing taste with a citric finish.

Along with that, Soda & Swine completes the scene with some food. The eatery serves a small but powerful menu that you can savor till 1:30am. Meatballs rule it, with perfect portions and spices. The décor goes to the woody side, opposing to the elegant style of Polite Provisions, but completing it at the same time.

Highlight: I absolutely love meat, specially beef, but The Hen became my new best friend. Chicken meatballs with mushroom cream sauce and provolone cheese. As a side, fried pizza knots served with marinara sauce and parmesan cheese.

Are you hungry and wanna know more? Get there early and have fun!

Cheers!
