Anh and I were in the bbq mood so off we were to the semi new Taegukgi Korean BBQ House next to Zion and M.I.T Express in Kearny Mesa.

The inside is very spacious and even boasts a long bar that spans the length of the restaurant.  We happend to come on a Tuesday which would turn out to be the right day because their all you can eat lunch special is $13 on Tuesdays (normally $17.99).  They have other specials on certain days so make sure to check on those if you are interested in going.

You can’t read the fine print but basically it lists all the basic rules many other “ayce” places have.  Don’t order more than you can eat, there’s a two hour limit, you can’t take anything to go, etc.

We got all the side dishes including the steamed egg and a salad which was actually very tasty.  I’m a sucker for that soy/vinegar dressing.  I know it’s filler but that didn’t stop us from getting an extra plate of it.

We ordered the pork ribs, beef bulgogi, chicken bbq, and the beef brisket (not pictured).  The favorite was the beef bulgogi and the chicken.  The seasoning on the pork wasn’t our favorite and was a little bit salty while the beef brisket was nothing to get too excited about.  The beef bulgogi, although marinated lacked a depth of flavor and the quality of the meat was not as high as other Korean bbq places such as Manna or ones in Koreatown in LA.  Having said that, it was $13.  I’ve paid way more to “fill up” before.  The service was really great until the last part of our meal when we were ready to go.  Before that point we were being checked on, asked a number of times if we wanted our grill to be changed out, and got our side dishes refilled.  For whatever reason when we were done they never came back to give us our bill and it was hard to track them down.  When we finally did get the bill and give it back to them it seemed like an eternity to get it back.  I think we waited close to 10 minutes, even with us asking another waiter to check on it for us.  So 4/5 of the meal was great service wise and that last fifth was not.  If you plan on checking it out, maybe save a visit like this around Thanksgiving or Christmas when work is slow and you don’t plan on getting anything done after.  I was utterly useless for the rest of the day so keep that in mind!

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
