Rubios currently has a couple new menu items at all their locations and we were invited to try them out.

Right now they are offering a Tropical Shrimp Burrito and Tropical Shrimp Tacos for a limited time. How can you not dig their tagline, “hot, yet tropicool.” Ahhh yeah.

A Rubios visit wouldn’t be complete with a salsa lineup for our tasting pleasure. IMG_3553

At first glance the burrito and tacos looked like they had the same ingredients. But the few differences made each taste noticeably different. Both have pan seared ancho shrimp with tropical salsa made with mango, pineapple, and chiles, pickled red onions, and a creamy chipotle sauce. The tacos have cabbage added to this with some lime wedges on the side. If you get the shrimp taco plate it comes with beans as well. I really enjoyed the flavor combination here. There was the tiniest hint of heat after a few bites which I liked. The tropical salsa was sweet and fruity, and when combined with the chipotle sauce and shrimp, left you wanting more. The size of the taco with all the ingredients together worked nicely.

Instead of cabbage, the tropical shrimp burrito had romaine lettuce, Mexican rice, black beans, and guacamole. While the burrito was good, it was harder to pick out the flavors compared to the tacos. With the tacos you could easily taste each ingredient and get hints of chipotle or mango and they were easily identifiable. The burrito had so much more going on that it kind of all blended together for me. I do appreciate the guacamole because hey, guacamole makes everything taste better! All in all I think these are nice seasonal items to choose from to mix things up. Both items are reasonable and under $10. They won’t have them around forever so if you are intrigued you better go soon and let us know what you think!

Thanks to Danielle over at Bolt for arranging the visit!

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
