Designer Whey

Designer Whey sent us over a package of their various whey protein products and we attempted to replicate some of their recipes found on their website. There was a time I was incorporating different types of protein in my diet when I was working out a lot. That was a long time ago. Since this isn’t a fitness or nutrition driven blog I’ll focus on the taste, as my tongue happens to be a much more powerful muscle than say my abs lately. Here is a little snippet from the Designer Whey website if you are unfamiliar with whey:

Your body has different needs for different situations.  With a regular, well-balanced diet, you are already getting a good amount of protein from many of the foods you eat.  But with our multitasking, hectic schedules, and workouts, your body needs additional protein to recover and, depending on your workouts, build muscle.

That’s where whey comes in:
• Whey is pure so your body quickly absorbs it for maximum post-workout recovery and nutrition.
• Whey is a “complete” lean protein with the right balance of amino acids and protein to help your immune system.

The avocado was camera shy and didn’t make it into the picture. 🙁

The white bean avocado dip turned out smooth and light with a faint taste of avocado. The cumin gave it an extra punch that it needed. The main distinguishable flavor was the white beans. Overall it was nice and a good snack alternative to more unhealthy dips. If I were to make it again I’d add a little more avocado.

Bear Down! This drink was interesting because you can control the sourness by adding more or less lemon at your discretion. By itself it was a little too lemony for my taste. But with the blueberries it added an extra burst of flavor. Not my favorite drink of choice since the lemon flavor tasted somewhat artificial.

This recipe was my favorite of the three. I used skim milk for mine. It also asked for two packets of instant coffee. I decided on one decaf and one regular so I could sleep at night. Chocolate chips were also optional and I opted for Andes mint chocolate chips to add on top. Yum. Cold things are awesome and I am a fan of mixing chocolate and bananas. Since there were two packets of coffee mix, you could certainly taste the coffee and I could see this powering me through a rough morning any day of the week. The Andes mints wouldn’t be optional for me. I loved biting into the sweet chocolate chips to get a rush of mint chocolate to balance the bitter coffee flavor. Not bad!

It can be challenging finding healthy things to eat that won’t compromise on taste. There are tons of protein options out there and drinking straight up protein with milk or water can get boring and monotonous. It is great to see Designer Whey offering different recipes to mix things up so you can continue to achieve your health goals, but keeping it fresh while having fun at the same time.

Designer Whey products are sold online and at brick and mortar stores like Target, Sprouts, and Ralphs.

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
