Un Mundo Mexican Grill – La Jolla, UTC

Un Mundo Mexican Grill La Jolla’s newest take on fresh SoCal Mexican cuisine.  They just recently opened their doors a couple months ago in August, but are quickly building traction.

So despite taking 6 years of Spanish throughout Jr. High, High School, and then University, I still couldn’t remember what “Un Mundo” meant.  Pathetic I know!  Luckily Darren knew it meant “One World” and he walked in with his head held high.

Inside the restaurant we were greeted with a pleasant modern setup and blue highlights across the walls.  We met up with Galen (GM) who would be our guide for the evening.  He let us know that the primary goal was to keep the menu simple, but super fresh and flavorful.  They use hormone free meats, and fresh produce from Specialty Produce and Susie’s Farm.  You can definitely see and taste the difference.

To order, you simply fill out a card that corresponds to a Taco, Bowl, Burrito, & Salad.  From there you simply check off any customization you’d like to add (most are free, and the others nominal).

This chicken taco was rad.  The marinaded chicken was super tasty and moist.  But, the generous chunks of fresh avocado and mayo really made this standout!  It may have been my favorite of the night… well, the fries may have been my favorite.

Check these out.  You WILL become addicted.  These are jalapeno dusted “papas” (fries) that are seasoned perfectly.  The heat doesn’t immediately hit you, but after awhile, you’ll probably want a drink close by.  So GOOODD!

The carne asada taco was very fresh also.  We both enjoyed the generous amounts of fresh guacamole on top.  The tomatoes were also great quality (not sandy or flavorless).  This one is another winner if you’re a steak fan!

Cotija cheese is lightly dusted a top this Habanero Salsa covered Pork Shoulder.  It’s accompanied with lime-cilantro rice, black beans, sour cream, and cilantro.  This was very flavorful, although I did feel a couple pieces of the pork were a touch dry.

Galen also brought us a SoCal burrito, surf and turf style!  We both like this one a lot also.  It’s wrapped in a spinach tortilla and stuffed silly with carne asada, shrimp, fries, avocado, and cilantro-lime rice.  I’d definitely order this again.

As we made our way to the final stretch, we realized we had tried all of their signature dishes in each category (tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads).

To end the night, we shared a salad interlaced with fresh roasted zucchini squash, avocado, marinaded chicken, grilled corn, and carrots.  The dressing was a lemon cilantro vinaigrette which was the perfect accompaniment.

All in all, we had a very enjoyable meal here and will be back.  There’s no shortage of Mexican food in SD, but Un Mundo will wow you over with their quality ingredients and delicious flavors.  By the time we left, we were incredibly stuffed.  But, somehow we stumbled back to the car, only to look up and see a new sign shinning across the way.  It said, “Lil’ Dipper“… curious.

As mentioned above, we were invited to dine with Un Mundo, but our opinion remains our own.
