George’s at the Cove: Ocean Terrace – La Jolla

George’s at the Cove: Ocean Terrace has been one of my favorite spots to take people from out of town looking to splurge on a nicer meal with a killer view. I’m sad to report it has been quite a while since I last visited. I think my absence coincides with the dismay I felt when I found out they added surcharges for restaurant week items years ago. It was one of the first ones, if not the first one I remember ever doing that. But much like my Wendy’s ban of 10+ years, it was time to let it go. After all, my parents were in town and one of the only requests from my mother was to dine at a restaurant with a nice view.

Mexican Bay Scallop Ceviche: cilantro, pico de gallo, California avocado, tortilla chips

So we kick off our meal with some fresh ceviche. I don’t normally order strictly scallop ceviche because I tend to gravitate to fish more. This was good though. I could have used a little more lemon or lime and some salt. The textures were nice though, and we couldn’t help but enjoy chomping away down to the very last chip while soaking in the ocean view.

Spaghetti with Clams: toasted garlic, roasted tomatoes, white wine and extra virgin olive oil

Mother went with the pasta dish with clams. She loves her pasta and clams. No skimping here as the clams seem to outnumber the noodles. It was very clean tasting and maybe even a tad bit under seasoned. But the clams themselves were cooked perfectly and the tomato sauce was well done.

Marinated and Grilled Fresh Fish Tacos: jalapeño-lime mayonnaise, California avocado, cilantro, shredded cabbage

My dad and I went with the fish tacos. So side story on the parentos. Mom is more adventurous than dad when it comes to food. Dad likes his Chinese food and buffets (typically with a lot of Chinese options). However lately, we have convinced him to try other types of food and occasionally, he likes it! This was one of those cases. He actually finished his plate faster than I did! What what what!?

The fish was ever so delicate and flaky and these fish tacos are the first thing I ever tried when I dined at George’s years ago. They tasted the same then as they do now. Amazing. The balance and pure joy of eating these surely will have me coming back sooner than later. So here ends my drought of not going to George’s in La Jolla.

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
