Nicky Rottens Bar & Burger Joint – Coronado

I heard of Nicky Rottens Bar & Burger Joint, but never visited before. There are three locations in San Diego, however, two of them are operated independently of the other. The location we visited is on Coronado. I always welcome an opportunity to visit the island.

If sports watching is what you seek, they have you more than covered here with tv’s galore scattered throughout the restaurant bar.

Buffalo Wings: Natural Farm Raised Wings Served with Ranch and Bleu Cheese Dressing

Wings! Always a must for me. We ordered two varieties, medium and spicy barbecue. The medium was more of a classic buffalo wing flavor which I enjoyed a bit more than the spicy bbq.

Warm Spinach Salad: Organic Spinach Topped with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Egg, Pine Nuts and Grilled Steak

If you can get over the salad being warm, you are sure to like this one. It took me a few bites to accept what I was eating and start to really enjoy it. Other than a few pieces of gristle, the steak was nice and cooked a perfect medium rare.

Peppercorn Burger with French Fries: Swiss Cheese, Sautéed Onions, Mushrooms, Topped with Spiked Peppercorn Sauce

The burgers and sandwiches come with either fries or tots. They do not skimp on the potatoes here. It was like we won the potato jackpot!

What a tasty burger! Your hands will get messy with this one. When it tastes this darn good I don’t mind getting dirty. It is well worth the extra napkins. The ratio of mushrooms, meat, onions, and peppercorn sauce had me humming “mmmm mmmm good.” Fingers may have been licked during consumption of this burger.

Grilled Hot Pastrami Sandwich with Tater Tots: Thinly Sliced Pastrami Served with Swiss Cheese, Grilled Onions, Whole Grain Dijon Mustard on Grilled Sourdough Bread

The pastrami was decent. Perhaps because I was head over heels with the burger, the pastrami sandwich didn’t stand out. The tots however, were great. I hope they never ever fade away again.

Cookie Bomb: House made cookies with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce

Last up was the Cookie Bomb. I immediately thought Pizookie from BJ’s. There is a cookie underneath all of the toppings, you just have to dig in. While I enjoyed it, the actual cookie layer got really mushy and didn’t have a crisp bottom to stand up to the ice cream. Although it didn’t stop me for too long as I still ate quite a bit more than I should have.

Final Thoughts

Service was great and they seem to really appreciate the locals that frequent their restaurant. It’s at a nice location just a short distance from the ocean. As far as the food goes, the Warm Spinach Salad and the Peppercorn Burger were stand out winners. The other items were okay, but these two were in a league of their own. I can almost taste the burger when I look at the picture again. It is comforting to know if I’m in the area and have to watch my Lakers, I now have another home. 😛

Disclaimer: We were invited to dine at Nicky Rottens and our meal was complimentary.  However, our opinions remain our own.

About Darren

Fooood! I love it if you can't tell already. I love everything about it. The taste, the smell, the look, the feel, the satisfaction, the gratification, and ultimately: the fun! I've been in San Diego for about 10 years now and it amazes me that there are still places to uncover. Traveling, eating, and taking pictures of food has always been a hobby of mine. So naturally Michael and I thought it made sense to share what we found with all of you. I tend to side with the savory but never shy away from a knock out dessert. If you have a place you think we haven't tried let us know! We're always on the lookout...
